About Me

My name is Abby Schwartz and you might say I was born into the business of advertising and marketing. My father, Larry Alten, was my hero and shaped my design sensibilities and approach to creative. He was an art director of legendary talent and ran his own Philadelphia ad agency. When I was young, he would nurture my design skills by lining up photos from his latest fashion shoot and asking me to choose my favorites. He put me to work setting headlines in type and taught me the art of precise letter spacing, strategic line breaks and ample white space. From him, I inherited a strong work ethic, a drive for perfection and a refusal to give anything less than my best, no matter the size of the job.

I started my career as an award-winning art director at two Philadelphia ad agencies—SonderLevitt Advertising and McAdams, Richman & Ong. I always had strong writing skills, and when I launched Brainstorm Communications in 2000, I began offering design and copywriting under one roof.

Why healthcare marketing?

After working on the ad agency side for several years, I was hired as the advertising manager for the national brand at U.S. Healthcare, a Fortune 50 health insurance company that was soon acquired by Aetna. Healthcare took on a more personal meaning for me when my daughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, just before her second birthday. My family was suddenly faced with a new reality that included hospitals, medical tests and multidisciplinary care teams. Together, we learned how to navigate the daily demands of living with a chronic illness.

When I went into business as Brainstorm Communications, I chose to focus on hospital and healthcare marketing because I knew that my personal experience would inform my work and enable me to comprehend the patient experience on a deeper level. Today I am as enthusiastic about healthcare as I ever was. It is an ever-changing industry with exciting breakthroughs, genuine human drama and meaningful substance. I am proud to team with clients who are making a positive difference in people’s lives.
